A lot has been said and written about walking as a way of burning up extra fat. In fact walking is a very effective way to shed extra weight if done effectively. However, for it to be successful, you need to be consistent and regular. Taking a walk is something one can enjoy as a hobby. In this way, it will not be seen as a burden.

It is advisable to seek medical opinion before starting power walking. Do some stretching before you start to walk. In the beginning, walk at a moderate speed for about an hour then increase your time gradually. You also need to see that you are increasing the distance covered as distance is more important than the time.

While walking, always avoid over-striding. This means lengthening the stride to cover more distance. This can make you tired much more easily.
Also, keep your head and neck relaxed and straight while walking. Swing your arms and hip rotate. Your steps should not just be flat footed.

As was said earlier, when it comes to weight loss program concentrate on the distance rather than speed. When you walk at slow speed, you burn calories because, you stop and start with every step. When you walk at high speed, you burn more calories as you utilize a number of muscle groups.

For walking to be effective in weight loss you need to make sure of the following:

• Don’t maintain the same route. Let your routes and the environment be of more interest to you than the calories you are burning. In this way, you will not see it as a burden.

• Get a walking mate. If you have a friend or friends you can walk along with, it will be better as it will make it fun. Just make sure that you walk with people who have the same interest in weight loss so you don’t get discouraged by them. If you have a dog, you can also walk along with it sometimes.

• Try not to be conscious of the time. Don’t check your clock regularly to see if it is time to stop. Just enjoy your walk. If you are walking with friends, then sometimes compete against one another.
